TikTok Extends Video Descriptions in Length

TikTok is lengthening video descriptions, offering producers more chances to make their material search engine friendly.

The length of video descriptions has significantly increased, giving TikTok producers more opportunities to make their material more search engine friendly.
TikTok is increasing the length of descriptions from 300 characters to 2,200 characters, according to a notification emailed to users.

TikTok claims that it uses text in the description to choose which videos to recommend to users in addition to improving the searchability of the material.

Social media expert Matt Navarra provides a screenshot of the notification he got about the change:
You can now type up to 2200 characters in the description of your posts," the message reads. "This allows you to express more details about your creations, describing what your videos show, giving you the chance to get closer to your audience, generating more engagement while becoming more searchable and better recommended by TikTok to viewers.

TikTok is embracing this trend by enabling users to make their videos more search-friendly as younger generations use the app more and more as a search engine.

When TikTok began including links to search results in video descriptions, I first reported about this change in search behavior in June.

Google stated in public that TikTok and Instagram are the go-to search engines for a sizable portion of young people in July.

"In our investigations, almost approximately 40% of young people don't go to Google Maps or Search, they go to TikTok or Instagram when they're looking for a location for lunch," said Prabhakar Raghavan, senior vice president of Google.

Users can optimize movies for more search terms by extending video descriptions from 300 to 2,200 characters.

Local businesses can include more keywords relating to their city and state while advertising themselves on TikTok, for instance.

Thus, they might have a better chance of turning up when someone searches for "independent enterprises in downtown Toronto." Additionally, they will have plenty of area to include text that describes the video.

The character increase also enables authors to provide viewers with greater context for the images they see in videos.

In-video captions are a common way for creators to add extra information, but search engines can't index those captions.

Don't forget that Google searches include TikTok videos. Writing thorough descriptions can increase the visibility of movies on TikTok and in conventional search engines.

It will be intriguing to observe how content producers use the many additional characters in a video description.

Like in the early days of SEO, would creators pack the description space with keywords?
Will they overuse hashtags, as people used to do on Instagram, in the description section?
We may observe all of the above, but learning what works for TikTok search will require some experimentation.

I'll keep an eye on TikTok SEO when more users start using the longer character limit.
